Earn $21/hour

This is a professional position teaching swimming to developmentally disabled individuals. An Employee in this class organizes and supervises Aquatics programs for therapeutic purposes, to teach cooperation, sportsmanship, daily perceptual motor skills, and to provide structured development programs and promote lifetime sports for residents. Work is performed under the direction of the Program Director. Knowledge of the principles and practices of aquatics and its therapeutic value as it relates to developmentally disabled individuals.

  • Ability to understand the psychology of physically or mentally retarded persons.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a positive working relationship with staff and residents.
  • Ability to maintain all required documentation and provide adequate information for the IDT.
  • Ability to secure the confidence of various groups in recreational activities.
  • Ability to lift, transfer and carry residents usually exceeding fifty (50) pounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and carryout programs with creativity and initiative.
  • Ability to organize and direct individual and group programming.
  • Knowledge of pool safety, first aid and CPR as it relates to recreational programming.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years old.
  • Bachelor's degree

Such training as may have been gained through graduation from a four year college or university with major course work in physical and /or recreational education, special education, or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Adapted Aquatics Instructor and/or Life Guarding Certification preferred.
