Job Description

Widener University is currently seeking a part-time Grounds Utility Technician. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Buildings and Grounds, this position will be responsible for grounds maintenance, moving, event setup and an assortment of general maintenance jobs. This position may become more specialized based upon the employee's development and training or the department's needs.

A subtitle may be added to this position to indicate additional expertise in a specific trade or craft. The grounds utility technician is encouraged to make this a developmental position. This position is considered essential and expected to report and remain on campus in response to emergencies and for managing severe weather events. This position may also be required to work weekends and off-hours to support weekend operations and special events.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):

Essential duties:

  • Policing for trash and debris, trash and recycling removal,
  • Utility duties including: furniture moving and setup, cleanout of storage rooms, basements, hallways and mechanical rooms.
  • Building maintenance and trade support: support and help trades in the conduct of their work by performing tasks within technical capabilities. Level of technical capability for a given task will be determined by the trade technician being assisted or the Assistant Director.
  • Provides work order documentation, as required
  • Maintains a professional appearance.
  • Maintains a positive customer service orientation and attitude.

Secondary responsibilities:

  • Mowing, pruning, mulching, weeding, leaf removal, and snow removal.
  • Operates a variety of grounds maintenance power equipment including, lawn mowers, trimmers, leaf blowers, snow throwers, snow plows, dump trucks, pick-up trucks, utility vehicles, salt spreaders, etc.
  • Cooperates with other university employees and related contractors in the performance of related duties to achieve the best possible outcomes.
  • Other duties as assigned and within capabilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):

Required:

  • Ability to communicate clearly with good interpersonal skills.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license required with evidence of insurability
  • Ability to work in teams to accomplish tasks

Preferred:

  • Experience in building and construction trades

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS:

  • Must be able to stand, sit, bend, kneel, climb stairs, reach, and climb ladders;
  • Must be able work in confined spaces and in elevated spaces (e.g. scaffold, bucket-truck platform, ladders, high-reach lifts);
  • Must be able to lift 60 pounds at waist height and carry for 20 feet;
  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds from ground to overhead;
  • Must be able to shovel snow manually;
  • Essential and required to report and remain on campus in response to emergencies and weather events even when normal business operations are cancelled or suspended;
  • May be required to work on weekends and holidays to support weekend operations or special events
