As a Heavy Equipment Repairer, you will perform a wide range of shop duties, as well as assist mechanics with preventive maintenance and routine repairs for heavy mobile gasoline and diesel fuel equipment maintained by the shop.

Heavy Equipment Repairer

Serves in the Equipment Maintenance Division in the Engineering and Maintenance Department at Washington Dulles International Airport.

Performs a wide range of shop duties, preventive maintenance and routine repairs on various types of stationary and mobile equipment maintained by the shop in accordance with accepted trade practices. Performs related functions.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs general shop duties that include but are not limited to fueling, escorting, maintaining inventory, running parts, reloading broom cores, cleaning vehicles, shop cleaning, in addition to assisting journey level mechanics with the maintenance and repair of the equipment maintained by the shop.

Performs preventive maintenance and repairs for heavy mobile gasoline and diesel fuel equipment maintained by the Shop (e.g. light trucks, mowing equipment, dump trucks, cranes, backhoes, snow removal equipment, etc.).

Uses inspection guide cards and manufacturers manuals in regularly performing preventive maintenance inspections (4, 8 and 12 month).

Uses parts catalogs and manufacturer's specifications to identify replacement materials to be ordered and distributed by tools and parts attendant

May consult with equipment users to gather more information about the nature of operating difficulties; refers unusual or difficult problems to Leader; and enters complete details of all work required/completed on a work order request form.

Accompanies journey level mechanics on service calls to stalled or inoperative vehicles and equipment; defers to mechanics' diagnosis of problem, but may offer advice and/or opinion.

May make service calls to vehicles that do not require major repairs but quick actions (such as jump-starts).

Performs recurring duties when instructed by the Leader (e.g. driving equipment to fueling station, dispensing fuel, cleaning work areas, etc.).

May also perform State vehicle inspections and fuel emission tests, as regulated by the Commonwealth of Virginia for various Authority vehicles and equipment.

Performs other duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Three years of progressively responsible experience in maintenance and repair for heavy mobile gasoline and diesel fuel equipment.

Knowledge of and skill in installing components, accessories, and parts of systems to identify potential and immediate deficiencies and take temporary or corrective action.

Knowledge of and skill in performing repair and maintenance of heavy mobile equipment according to acceptable trade practices.

Knowledge of the mechanical makeup and operating characteristics of basic engine systems, and ability to recognize operating deviations and take appropriate corrective actions.

Skill in using various types of hand tools and special equipment in making adjustments and repairs.

Knowledge of and skill in removing and replacing parts and making "tune-up" type adjustments and settings according to established specifications.

General knowledge of the working relationships of heavy duty systems and parts to assist journey level mechanics in repair functions.

Ability to perform general analyses of data and information (including reading diagrams and schematics).

Ability to work safely and knowledge of the safety rules, regulations, and procedures to do so.

Ability to speak and write effectively.

Skill in using a computer, computerized work order and time and attendance system, and specialized computerized vehicle diagnostic equipment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

A Class B or Class A Commercial Driver's License.

EDUCATION

A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED

A state driver's license in good standing.

Licensed as a Class B Commercial Driver (CDL) within 90 days of hire, promotion, or placement into the position.

NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORS

May work occasionally outside in all kinds of weather when making service calls.

Is exposed to possible burns from chemicals or heated engine components, possible electrical shock, possible falls from ladders or large mobile equipment, and slips on oily flooring. Follows general and/or special safety precautions, and wears protective personal equipment, as required.

Is subject to hold-over and recall on a 24-hour basis for essential services and emergencies such as snow removal.

Work is typically reviewed in progress and upon completion for quality, quantity, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors.
