Position Summary

As a Substation and Power Transmission Construction Specialist you will be responsible for working on transmission and substation projects to support a team providing construction management and inspection services for the major local area airports. Performing all aspects of construction services on behalf of the project owner and will generally provide the following services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform construction observation and inspection on various projects, which may involve the construction of power transmission lines, substations, and related power distribution elements.
  • Monitor contractor's activities and apply field testing and inspection procedures and equipment to perform required field testing to determine compliance with contracts, specifications, and engineering principles.
  • Tasks may involve acting as an owners' representative during construction and may involve invoice and change management, attending or facilitating meetings, and other duties.
  • Prepare daily reports, noting observations or activities performed.
  • Communicate findings with project managers, contractors, and/or client representatives.
  • Follow airport and additional contract safety protocols.
  • Plan and schedule activities in preparation for the mobilization of construction crews
  • Interact with utility partners, contractors, permitting authorities, and inspectors.
  • Ensure projects are completed safely within budget, scope, and per plans and technical specifications.

Required Skills / Abilities

  • Must demonstrate experience in projects involving the construction of power transmission and distribution facilities.
  • Must be able to safely navigate a construction site.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Must be able to utilize laptops, mobile phones, and other devices effectively.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • 5+ Years exp.

Education and/or Experience

  • 5+ Years exp.
  • Knowledge of MWAA construction standards and specifications.

Certifications / Licenses

  • Materials testing certifications relating to the inspection and testing of asphalt, concrete, soils, metals, striping, and other materials from governing bodies such as ACI, VDOT, AWS, NICET, or other governing bodies is highly desired.

Physical Demands

The incumbent in this position can typically expect to sit and use his/her hands to handle and feel for more than 2/3 of the day. He/she can expect to stand or walk for more than 1/3 of the day. Talking and listening are also expected for more than 2/3 of the day. The ability to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, or reach with arms will be needed for less than 1/3 of the day.

This position requires that the incumbent be able to lift items up to 10 pounds on an infrequent basis.

The incumbent in this position should have clear vision at 20 inches or less. He/she should be able to view various reports and forms as well as information displayed on a computer monitor and have the ability to distinguish between different colors. Depth perception, peripheral vision, the ability to focus, and the ability to see from a distance are also necessary.
