Job Description
The Chaplain provides comprehensive pastoral and spiritual care services to the patients, families and staff of VCUHS.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Board Certified, Provisionally Board Certified or Board Eligible Chaplain by one of the following:
Association of Professional Chaplains (APC);
National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC);
Neshama;
Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC); or
The Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association Canadienne des Soins Spirituels (CASC/ACSS).

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
If not Board Certified upon hire, achieve full or provisional Board Certification within 24 months of hire.
Once board certification is achieved, it must be maintained for continued employment.
Board Certification by any of the following organizations is acceptable: APC, NACC, Neshama, NAJC, CASC/ACSS

Experience REQUIRED:
One (1) full-time year of post-Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) chaplaincy experience, which may include second year residency.

Experience PREFERRED:
Experience as a chaplain in an academic medical center and Level 1 Trauma Center

Education/training REQUIRED:
Master's Degree (72 hours) in Theology or equivalent (as determined by the Association of Professional Chaplains) from an accredited institution recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA)
Completion of four units of clinical pastoral education as certified by on of the following: Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE); National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC); Neshama; Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC); or The Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association Canadienne des Soins Spirituels (CASC/ACSS)

Education/training PREFERRED: N/A

Independent action(s) required:
Responds to calls that request chaplaincy services.
Provides bereavement care and support to families.
Supports staff following bereavement event.
May participate in research and grant writing.
Consults with Department Director or other clinical faculty member in complex patient care situations as needed.

Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable): N/A

Additional position requirements:
Days, evenings, nights and/or weekends. Shifts worked depend on specific job assignment.

Provides leadership and support at Children's Hospital of Richmond (CHoR) at VCU Health for the Spiritual Care Department. Provides for an appropriate and comprehensive spiritual care, consultation, education, and emotional support for patients, families, providers and team members.

Directly supports staff chaplains and students. Ensures clinical coverage of the hospital. Participates in the hospital clinical coverage rotation including holiday coverage.

As delegated by the Spiritual Care Department Director, represents the department in interdisciplinary hospital meetings, committees, and activities. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with hospital leadership. As delegated by the Director, meets with community members and organizations, faith communities, outside agencies and other health professionals to promote positive hospital relations.

Under the leadership of the Director, responds to team member needs following crisis and/or workplace violence. In partnership with EAP, provides support response and other resilience/wellbeing interventions. Under the leadership of the Director collaborates with others on recognition and memorialization of significant events such as team member death, organizational change, or other significant events.

Participates in leadership and department meetings. In collaboration with the Director explores evidenced based practice to bring to the team for consideration and implementation.

Responsible for clinical competency and leadership development of chaplains at the CHoR.

Minimum Hiring Standards:

  • Master's Degree (72 hours) in Chaplaincy, Theology, Sociology, Psychology or equivalent (as determined by the Association of Professional Chaplains) from an accredited institution recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA)
  • Completion of four units of clinical pastoral education as certified by one of the following: the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE)
  • Board Certified by one of the following: Association of Professional Chaplains (APC); National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC); Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC); or The Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association Canadienne des Soins Spirituels (CASC/ACSS), or Spiritual Care Association (SCA)
  • Have a minimum of 5-7 years' experience (post CPE) as a chaplain
  • Have a minimum of 2-3 years of leadership experience in healthcare or healthcare chaplaincy
  • Experience working in and fostering a diverse staff and student environment is required
  • Knowledge of clinical ethics and ethical decision making
  • Good decision-making skills
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Experience serving as a mentor for Clinical Pastoral Education Students
  • Experience working in a university setting
  • Experience in chaplaincy research
