Job Summary

Performs and/or coordinates laboratory tests to determine chemical and physical characteristics of alloy (metallic) and non-alloy (non-metallic) materials for such purposes as quality control, process control, or product development and production.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to follow all Howmet's safety regulations, work rules, along with handbook and all departmental specific requirements.

  • Monitor and manage incoming alloy master heats. Facilitate the casting of test material, test bar machining if required, and testing to specification requirements from engineering, manufacturing, and customers. Record test results, track progress of testing, issue retest based on testing results, obtain and issue finished report, and generate master heat certifications. Use of LIMS system. Releasing of alloy to production utilizing the OCHMS system.
  • Performs chemical and physical testing of non-metallic materials to specifications and/or submits samples for testing at HRC testing facility. Coordination required with internal customers (QA, Engineering, etc.), material suppliers, and HRC.
  • Coordination of alloy testing samples required with machining suppliers and HRC testing facility.
  • Review internal and customer specifications as it relates to testing requirements.
  • Ability to communicate with Howmet Research Center (HRC) on their techniques and materials, as well as understand and utilize the corporate manuals.
  • May set-up, adjust, clean, maintain, and operate laboratory equipment and instruments as required for designated assignments. Equipment may include, but is not limited to, wet saws, polishing machines, microscopes, centrifuges, chemical balance scales, PH meters and other equipment.
  • Prepares chemical solutions according to standard formulas.
  • Review COC/COA (certificate of compliance or analysis) of incoming raw materials against corporate manual specifications before releasing materials to production.
  • Maintain testing schedules, organization, and documentation. Use of LIMS system.
  • Must comply with all company attendance policies and guidelines; this includes, but is not limited to, regular attendance and overtime (after hour or weekend) in support of production requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned to include the training for back-up responsibilities of other laboratory technicians.

Skills & Abilities

  • There are no licenses, or registrations required for this position. After appropriate training, employee must be certified/qualified for techniques as required by customer specifications (internal/external).
  • Strong computer skills using MS Office, and internal computer systems such as LIMS, lot trace, OCHMS, IPC, or other systems introduced to this facility.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to add subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.
  • Ability to understand when to stop and seek help prior to initiating the task if there is a question or inability to proceed.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
, Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • This position requires a minimum of a high school diploma or general education degree (GED). An Associates or Advanced degree is preferred.
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of one-year related experience with mechanical aptitude, laboratory environment and functions, and/or training in a metallographic lab is preferred.
