Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and Surgical Team members,
responsible for the handling of surgical instruments, supplies and equipment necessary
during general to moderately complex surgical procedures. Ensures understanding of
the assigned surgical procedures being performed and anticipates the needs of the
assigned surgeon and surgical team members. Also provides service support related to
patient preparation, patient transport, and assisting surgical care team with specific
patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs. Responds to emergent situations
according to established procedures.


PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Demonstrates and applies knowledge of advanced surgical techniques
2. Scrubs on complex surgical procedures such as:
a. Liver & Multi-visceral Organ Transplants
b. Endovascular Valve Replacement and/or Aneurysm Repair, TeVAR, FeVAR
c. Cardiac Surgical Team Membership
d. Ability to scrub cases involving Cardiopulmonary Bypass
e. HIPEC
3. Demonstrates critical thinking skills in relation to anticipating the perioperative needs
of the patient and surgeon.
4. Prepares the operating room by setting table, instruments and supplies according to
type of surgery.
5. Assures proper functioning of instruments and equipment prior to use and reports
needed repairs appropriately.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
* High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.
* Graduate of a Surgical Technology program
* Specific knowledge of surgical procedures within the operating room (OR), in
addition to knowledge of surgical procedures, practices and techniques in providing
patient care and assisting surgeons in the O.R.


CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:
* Current BLS certification required or become BLS certified within one month of start
date.
* Surgical Technologist certification required or 3-5 years of experience supporting
complex high acuity surgical volume, as defined above, in lieu of a certification.
