Structural Welder - Weld America (Project Based/Full Time)
Purpose:
Weld America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking Welders to support a project-based assignment in various locations around Hampton Roads.
This position will require work hours beyond the standard work week. This position will involve work for various divisions of Colonna's Shipyard, to include Steel America, and requires the ability to travel for short- and long-term assignments with limited notice.
Job Description:
  • Weld together metal components of products, as specified by layout, blueprints, diagram, work orders, welding procedures, or oral instructions, using electric arc-welding equipment.
  • Select and execute the best method to prepare all material surfaces to be welded, ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter.
  • Clean, degrease, deoxidize, or de-smut weld joint or work piece, using wire brush, portable grinder, or solvent clean/chemical bath as needed.
  • Welding completion accomplished in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions for at least three base materials using a wide variety of processes. (That is, deposit weld beads exhibiting proper sidewall and interpass fusion, size, profile, interpass cleanliness, wrap and staggered, fused, and cleaned starts and stops rarely (no more than 3%) requiring grinding/dressing to meet VT acceptance standards).
  • Lay out work from blueprints for the following, but not limited to plates for shearing, burning by manual or automatic burning and cutting, angles for punching and shearing, drilling patterns, templates for shaping steel, plates, and shapes to be shaped with or without heat, stiffeners and bulkheads to plates, bolt and fastener patterns for various parts, manholes, and equipment foundations.
  • Inspect work for proper fit-up and adequate cleanliness for welding.
  • Locate materials, fabricate, and install from blueprints the following, but not limited to ladders, handrails, stairways, grating, walkways, manholes, equipment foundations, pipe racks, brackets, pipe systems, braces and supports to maintain straightness.
  • Fabricate fit brackets, panels, complex beam/shape structures as needed.
  • Plumb transverse bulkheads and panels to fabricate enclosure complex weldments, shapes/plates, simple and complex parts from a drawing or sketches.
  • Operate and set up of the following equipment including but not limited to hydraulic jacks/pumps, chain falls, come-along, steamboat ratchets, slings, tie downs, iron workers, saws, pneumatic/electric tools, drill press, pipe benders, press brakes, plate shears, plasma cutting torches, and all manual, semi-automatic, & automatic cutting torches & machines.
  • Expertly repair base metal products and completed welds by adding the minimum amount of weld metal or heat and the minimum amount of grinding/smoothing to meet job specification.
  • Perform multi-pass, all position fillet and groove welds using FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) processes, or the most efficient combination thereof for steels, stainless steels, or nickel-based alloys, and for copper-based alloys, aluminum alloys, or titanium alloys.
  • Mark or tag material with proper job number, piece marks, and other identifying marks as required and always mark completed welds with welder number.
  • Perform single pass 5/16-inch minimum fillet welds in all positions using FCAW on carbon steel and at least -inch single-pass fillets on two other materials.
  • Supervise set up to perform welding in accordance with applicable WPS all welding equipment such as: wire feeders, sub-arc tractors, Bug O's, power sources, etc.
  • Clean torches and connect/lay-out cables and whips to optimize performance and perform routine maintenance on all equipment.
  • Train less-skilled welders enforcing good workmanship and safe welding practices throughout the work area.
  • Identify gaps in weld process controls and weld process surveillance inspections and recommend corrective action.
  • Complete standard dimensional computations and devise bracing and weld sequencing steps to maintain tolerance minimizing distortions.
Qualifications:
  • Must have at least 3 years' experience in Welding and be familiar with on-shipboard protocols.
  • Must be able to acquire all of Colonna's Procedure Qualifications - FCAW/ SMAW /GMAW/GTAW/ SAW-M.
  • Must have standard fitting abilities and knowledge of blueprints and Weld Gauges.
  • Must be a steady, reliable worker and exemplary craftsman.
  • Must be able to work up to 7 days a week, if needed, and have exemplary attendance.
  • Must be able and willing to work for various divisions of Colonna's Shipyard.
  • Must be willing and able to travel with limited notice.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Prefer 5-7 years of experience in Welding.
  • Combo Welder/Fitter's highly preferred.
  • Shipfitting experience highly preferred.
Security Requirements:
  • Must be able to pass a rigorous background check, be DBIDS eligible and maintain various shipyard access badges.
  • Must be eligible for a TWIC Card.
  • U.S citizenship is required.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.
  • Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
