Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, VA is hiring an experienced Clinical Lab Specialist to work full-time day shifts in Cytogenetics.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides oversight to scientific operations of Cytogenetics laboratory.
  • Performs interpretive review of patient results, including generation of draft final reports.
  • Works with laboratory leadership team to implement new Cytogenetics methodologies and tests.
  • Collaborates with pathology and physician teams to guide patient case management.
  • Serves as Cytogenetics subject matter expert within system level steering committees.
  • Generates and reviews laboratory policy and procedure in compliance with system and regulatory bodies.
  • Develops training and competency protocols for Cytogenetics laboratory in collaboration with leadership team.
  • Performs and provides leadership review of Cytogenetics laboratory Quality Management System.
  • Provide consultation to clients of the Cytogenetics Laboratory

Job Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in biological, chemical, or related scientific field. (preferred)
  • Bachelors (required)
  • ASCP or AMT certification (required, except for Ph.D. candidates)
  • ABMGG board certified or eligible to sit for board certification. (preferred)
  • Board eligible candidates must provide supporting documentation of eligibility and complete ABMGG certification within 1 year of hire.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience working within a clinical based Cytogenetics laboratory, including review, interpretation, and generation of patient reports.

Job Summary

Assumes responsibility for specific laboratory technical disciplines within all Sentara entities. May function as lab manager for specialized clinical discipline. Analyzes patient data and suggests physician protocol for confirming patient diagnosis; acts as a consultant to pathologists, physicians and other team members; identifies needs and implements training to ensure competency of laboratory staff. Coordinates implementation of new laboratory services within all Sentara entities. Contributes to the success of the organization through achievement of system, hospital and departmental goals and objectives.

Bachelor's Degree in the Sciences acceptable. Education, experience and ASCP/AMT certification must be acquired within the specific discipline of the department in which one is applying. Certification is not required for PHD candidates. Requires ability to travel between Sentara entities.
