Job Summary:

This position works with the Graduate Studies and Research teams in Weinberg College to coordinate a broad Conducts experimental research lab work to be integrated with clinical data. Assists in design and implementation of one or more specific phase(s) of entire project(s). Follows appropriate protocols, policies, procedures, regulations, Good Clinical & Good Laboratory Practices.

The Mesulam Center for Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease Center ("Mesulam Center") is a multi-departmental component of the Feinberg School of Medicine. We specialize in the clinical care and scientific study of neurological diseases that interfere with cognition and behavior. Areas of emphasis include age-related memory impairments and dementias. We are focused on Alzheimer's disease, Primary Progressive Aphasia and Frontotemporal Dementia. Our three interacting missions are to investigate the causes and clinical characteristics of neurodegenerative diseases, to ensure that our patients are the beneficiaries of the latest research advances, and to explore the neural foundations of behavior and cognition in health and disease.

Specific Responsibilities:

* Following protocols, designs, sets-up and conducts basic experiments.

* Analyzes and troubleshoots protocols and data obtained from individual experiments and recommends alternatives and suggestions to improve processes, validity and/or accuracy.

Histology:

* Tissue fixation/processing: embedding, preparation of blocks and sectioning, staining

* Immunohistochemistry

* Microscopy

Cellular Biology:

* Cell culture, cell isolation

* Functional studies

Stereology:

* Quantifying cellular structures

* Computation

* Photomicrograph image capturing

Neuropsychology:

* Organization of in vivo data

* Integrating cognitive test scores with histological data

Administration

* Maintains detailed records of results, which may include collecting, extracting & entering data.

* Manipulates, interprets &/or presents results.

* Prepares charts & graphs for presentations & publications.

* Performs scientific literature searches in support of research.

* Completes portions of grant applications, manuscripts & publications.

Supervises

* Trains students and volunteer lab members

Miscellaneous

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

* Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

* Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions as required by research protocols;

* Demonstrated computer skills, including spreadsheets and basic computations;

* Attention to detail and accurate record keeping;

* Ability to work independently and in a team environment;

* Manual dexterity.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Completion of 4 year Bachelor's degree

Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)

* Previous experience in or exposure to basic science research

* General knowledge of neuroscientific principles

Target hiring range for this position will be between $19.31-$24.14 per hour. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
