Job Description

The Surgical Technologist Lead acts as a clinical leader and resource in an Inova Operating Room (OR). Assists OR Service Leader to ensure unit compliance with quality, safety, regulatory requirements, and JCAHO standards. Assists the OR Service Leader in analyzing data, ensuring team adherence to performance standards, and improving processes continuously. Provides mentoring to the OR team. Works collaboratively and has respect for and understanding of other clinical disciplines. Uses and demonstrates clinical expertise in the assessment of staff learning needs, capabilities, and readiness. Demonstrates superior knowledge of aseptic and surgical techniques in the role of surgical technologist. Serves as primary liaison and information resource for specialty. Oversees the provision of therapeutic care in a holistic, evidence-based environment that produces excellent patient care with optimal patient outcomes. Supports the OR Service Leader's goals. Interacts with and contributes to the professional growth of Surgical Tech team members, colleagues, and others. Ensures efficient functioning of the specialty service and achievement of optimal patient outcomes.

Job Responsibilities

  • Identifies clinical and operational variables affecting patient and case outcomes. Anticipates variances and adjusts care proactively, utilizing required resources. Articulates the type, scope, and frequency of clinical and case variables affecting outcomes, including patient condition or special needs, equipment availability or functionality, and physician requests. Ensures needs are met time of case. Extrapolates patient's, physician's, or case needs from previous experiences. Creates individualized plan(s) of care. Engages other clinical professionals to assist in responding to possible problems.
  • Provides clear and appropriate information and documentation for routine and complex cases. Documents case status and ensures perioperative briefing and debriefing are completed with the team. Reports any change in patient status or patient requirements of the population.
  • Coordinates the delivery of appropriate services for specialty, physician group, and population.
  • Facilitates seamless transitions between pre-, intra-, and post-operative patient care. Assists, both directly and indirectly, with room turnover. Ensures surgical pause is performed according to procedure. Ensures hand-off to PACU meets established criteria and monitors delay reasons.
  • Identifies physician, case, staff, and patient family learning needs proactively. Utilizes vendors as a resource for providing education on equipment and instruments, including but not limited to printed materials, videos, posters, and demonstrations.
  • Facilitates and participates in multi-disciplinary communication regarding case and service requirements. Chairs Service Team Meetings with staff. Acts as a clinical leader and resource in an Inova OR.
  • Assists the OR Service Leader, by analyzing outcome data, to identify quality and process opportunity improvement processes. Accesses multiple data sets for quality improvement processes: OCCRs, Unit-Based committees, Systemwide committees, Staff and Surgeon Satisfaction surveys, and variance reports. Identifies trends. Collaborates with quality consultants or clinical specialists, educators, and senior nurse specialists to review data and plan improvement strategies. Reviews current clinical research literature and shares with leadership team and staff. Participates in performance improvement teams and is knowledgeable in Lean principles.
  • Mentors team. Understands, incorporates, and coaches team members on AORN, TJC, and other professional and regulatory standards into clinical practice. Utilizes and reinforces correct understanding of intraoperative outcomes. Creates, with supervisor, a self-development plan related to professional goals.
  • Demonstrates superior knowledge of normal and pathological A&P.
  • Assists the OR Service Leader as a primary resource for the surgical specialty and by assuming responsibility for management of specialty equipment and instrumentation.
  • Serves as a liaison to other departments. Meets with Sterile Processing leadership regularly to maximize instrumentation resources. Serves as primary liaison and information resource for specialty. Serves as a physician liaison and primary information resource and contact for the specialty. Monitors clinical, efficiency, and SCIP performance indicators on a daily basis. Assists the director with unit participation in emergency preparedness activities. Conducts education and coordinates emergency and trauma surgical skills and participates in unit-specific drills.
  • Acts as a change agent.
  • Addresses the service needs of patients, families, and surgeons. Interprets key drivers of patient and physician satisfaction to nursing staff. Provides service recovery to dissatisfied customers.
  • Oversees and assists team members in assigned functional area, which may include but not limited to, ensuring team is meeting key-deliverables and quality standards, addressing and resolving challenges, managing and tracking performance, and assisting in time management and scheduling; escalates issues to senior leaders as needed.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

  • Required Education: Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program.
  • Required Experience: 3 years' experience as a Surgical Technologist
  • Required Certification/License:
    • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) via NBSTSA or Tech in Surgery - Certified (TS-C) via NCCT
    • BLS via AHA required
    • Surgical Technologist registration required
      • Must be eligible for Surgical Technologist registration via Commonwealth of Virginia at time of hire. Registration must be completed within 6 months of hire.
