Job Description

The Allen Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking a lab manager to help support multiple federally- funded research projects focused on evolutionary biology and bioinformatics. Development in the Allen Lab aims to 1) sequence, sort and understand the ectoparasite communities of avian ectoparasites, 2) develop software, tools and models to support bioinformatic needs, and 3) to develop databases and combine datasets into research ready data. The main goals of the Allen lab are to use these tools to identify long term evolutionary patterns and understand how ecological factors play a role. Duties will include 1) ordering and organizing supplies to support research, 2) molecular work including PCR, gels, quantifying DNA and training others on these skills, 3) helping to build sample databases, along with writing code to help to extract character data from species descriptions. This position will be full-time, onsite and located in Blacksburg Virginia.

Required Qualifications

-B.S. or B.A. in biology, or computer science
-Prior work experience in a molecular lab
-Prior experience with programming in python, R or related languages
-Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to work in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications

- M.S. in Biology or related field
-experience with biological data
-experience with community science data
