The Covington Safety Manager ensures compliance with all health and safety regulatory requirements, and company health, safety, and security policies.

How You Will Impact Ingevity:

  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulatory requirements and company health, safety, and security policies
  • Effectively implement all safety and health initiatives and communicate a clear, proactive message to all levels of the organization.
  • Responsible for site Security program, and all aspects of the site's Safety and Health programs including the Contractor Safety Program
  • Responsible for implementing all elements of Process Safety Management (PSM) as per the company's initiatives
  • Administers the site Management of Change (MOC) program
  • Serve as site expert and facilitator for ergonomics program to be developed
  • Leads the safety team to ensure all department work is completed in a timely manner
  • Partners with the operations, maintenance, and quality departments to foster strong collaboration among teams
  • Investigate industrial accidents, injuries, or occupational diseases to determine causes and preventive measures, and provides leadership and guidance to the site in addressing root causes
  • Review existing safety programs to determine their adequacy and make improvements to systems to improve employee safety
  • Assist in the continuous improvement of the Ingevity Safety Management System by participating in corporate collaborations, special teams, and safety audits
  • Conducts or directs testing of air quality and noise levels to verify compliance with health and safety regulations and industrial hygiene best practices
  • Confer with medical professionals to assess health risks and to develop ways to manage health issues and concerns
  • Compile, analyze, and interpret statistical data related to occupational illnesses and accidents
  • Interpret safety regulations for others interested in industrial safety, such as safety engineers, labor representatives, and safety inspectors; stay informed of the impact of ISO/IATF 16949 on plant operations and support functions
  • Ensure that a process exists to promote the reporting of unsafe conditions, to provide resolution of the condition, and to provide prompt response to the employee(s) involved
  • Perform routine safety contacts, attend and present safety topics at safety meetings
  • Manage the annual budget for the area and ensure the group is meeting (or staying below if necessary) the budget
  • Serve as backup for some environmental tasks as required
  • Other duties as assigned

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Report man hours and other safety data as required by the site
  • Write weekly and monthly updates for the safety team.
  • Maintain OSHA logs for current, and previous 5 years, for the plant
  • Exemplifies safety procedures and wears appropriate PPE
  • Practices the IngeviWay

What You Need to Succeed:

  • A Bachelor's degree in safety and health, industrial hygiene, science, engineering or a relevant field is preferred. Related experience may qualify in lieu of a degree.
  • The successful candidate will be a strong safety leader who understands and can build operations and safety management systems
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in occupational safety & health, and/or industrial hygiene in an industrial environment is required (chemical manufacturing environment preferred).
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification is preferred but not required. The successful candidate should be willing to achieve this certification.
  • Knowledge and understanding of OSHA regulations applicable to a chemical manufacturing site, including Process Safety Management (PSM) experience
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and observational skills are required.
  • Successful candidate must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and be flexible to changing priorities based on business and facility needs.
  • Able to work in a team-oriented atmosphere as well as independently as projects warrant.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent communication, consensus building, and interpersonal skills are required.

Physical Requirements:

The requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee:

  • Must be able to observe and hear warning signs and signals within all areas of the company
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs.
  • Must be able to walk up steps for multiple floors and climb ladders.
  • Sit for up to 8 hours per day, use computer keyboard and mouse.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this job:

  • Must be able to work in an office environment, outside, and in an industrial setting.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, team environment

Travel Requirements:

Minimal travel is required, generally less than 1 day/month.
