Job Description
The Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Laboratory, which is part of the Hume- Lee Transplant Center, is a High Complexity Clinical Laboratory that provides services to the Solid Organ and the Bone Marrow Transplant Programs at VCU Health System. The Laboratory opened in 1965 as one of the first of its kind in the world and specializes in the most up-to date testing for antibody detection and compatibility testing. The Histocompatibility Laboratory is located in a 10,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility in the Virginia Bio-Technology Research Park.

This full time Histocompatibility Technologist position offers an opportunity to work with one of the busiest transplant programs in the nation and a clinical staff with a mission to provide the best in patient care, research and education.


Responsibilities include:
Perform serologic and molecular procedures that may include, but are not limited to , DNA extraction, PCR amplification, probe hybridization/detection, Next Generation Sequencing, cytotoxic or flow cytometric crossmatching, antibody screening/identification by Luminex and /or ELISA and other procedures as defined.
Testing will be performed within established turnaround times to aid clinicians in the determination of donor to recipient compatibility for transplantation.
Review and interpret final results and prepare reports (written or electronic). Will maintain, edit, and review computer and manual records to ensure accurate record keeping.

Experience REQUIRED: N/A

Experience PREFERRED:
A minimum of 1 year laboratory experience
Previous experience using various software applications (e.g. Excel, Word, Access, etc.)

Education/training REQUIRED:
A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited Life Science Program or Healthcare Program.

Education/training PREFERRED: MT or MLS or CHT certification or equivalent is preferred.

Independent action(s) required:
Daily performance of routine and stat HLA laboratory testing procedures.
Records QC data for daily functions.
Maintains computer records on all patients.
Takes action with test result discrepancies and procedural modifications when performing routine testing.

Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable): N/A

Additional position requirements:
Participates in the rotation of 24-hour emergency on-call for primary and backup call responsibilities.

Will perform the following:

  • daily equipment maintenance checks
  • routine maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment and software
  • duties associated with receipt, coordination, shipment and transport of donor and patient blood samples to include ordering, receiving, inspection of and preparation of supplies and reagents to meet performance and productivity standards
  • perform and review quality control as directed'

Participate in 24-hour emergency On-call responsibility to perform crossmatching (virtual crossmatch assessment or physical crossmatch) between deceased donors and organ transplant recipients. Participation in rotating backup on-call is also required. This requires excellent independent judgment in the performance of standard operating procedures.
