The Surg Tech Coordinator Spec Team works in collaboration with the Specialty Team Managers to ensure that appropriate equipment and supplies are available for surgical cases, the sterile field is set up and prepared correctly and to maintain communication between Sterile Processing and the OR.

This position serves as a technical resource for Surgical Technologists utilizing advanced level skills and knowledge. The position functions as an operating room Surgical Technologist, as needed, for all surgeries under the direct supervision of the RN circulator.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Registered by the State Board of Medicine and Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C) or Certified Operating Room or Surgical Technician (CORST) certification.

Certification or Registration Requirement for Continued Employment:
Registration by the Virginia State Board of Medicine, Current AHA, BLS, HCP Certification Current CST; TS-C or CORST required

Experience REQUIRED:

Minimum of 3-5 years experience as a Surgical Technologist or related scrub technician position with at least 2 years in a specific practice area

Experience PREFERRED:

Previous experience in a Level 1 trauma center and/or academic medical center

Education/training REQUIRED:

High School Diploma or equivalent Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program or a military training program or Licensed Practical Nursing Program

Education/training PREFERRED:

Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program

Independent action(s) required:

Functions under the direction of RN or independent practitioner in providing direct patient care, emotional support and problem solving, all in accordance with hospital, nursing and unit policies and procedures.

Requires prior approval or guidance from supervisor for time/schedule changes, legal issues, direct care which deviates from the standard and identification of educational resources to meet developmental needs.

Job duties may include the handling, transportation, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies.

Additional position requirements:

Surgical Technologists work all three shifts, weekends and holidays.

Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with employee's specific Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator.

Schedules, including requirements of shift rotations and hours of work may be adjusted as necessary to meet staffing requirements or in the best interests of the work unit.

Takes independent call for routine or high acuity cases after the orientation period.

Physical Requirements (includes use of assistance devices as appropriate):Physical: Lifting 50-100 lbs.

Other: Exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances

This individual must have experience with transplant surgery.
