Job Description:
Assists the Intellectual Property (IP) Attorneys with drafting and prosecuting US, foreign, international patent applications, as well as providing specialized support for other IP services in the area of Geophysics, seismic processing and interpretation. Specific job duties include: (i) drafting patent applications and prosecuting patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and in communication with international associates for foreign patent applications under the supervision of IP attorneys; (ii) preparing office action responses for local and international patent applications under the supervision of IP attorneys; (iii) generating documents in support of patent applications, including information disclosure statements, assignments, declarations and other materials related to patent prosecution; (iv) performing patent searches, analyzing invention disclosures, scientific or technical documents, and reviewing issued patents in order to evaluate patent specific issues such as patentability and validity; (v) conducting Freedom to Operate searches; (vi) conducting competitive landscape searches and reviewing prior art; and (vii) maintaining a current knowledge of intellectual property rules and regulations.
Job Requirements:
  • PhD in Electrical, Electronics or Software Engineering or Geophysics with coursework in seismic data processing, multicomponent seismic, seismic wave and ray theory, borehole geophysics, geophysical data processing, advanced physical geology, and petroleum geology;
  • One (1) year of experience as Patent Agent, Patent Scientist, Technical or Scientific Advisor to include:
  • One (1) year of experience with:
    1. Seismic data processing and application of seismic attributes (spectral decomposition) for hydrocarbon reservoir characterization;
    2. Conducting technical research and analysis into oil and gas exploration and production, petroleum geology;
    3. 2D/3D seismic processing and interpretation for hydrocarbon reservoir characterization in the oil and gas industry; and
    4. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) technology including GPR data acquisition, GPR data processing, and GPR data interpretation.
  • Six (6) months of experience with:
    1. Preparing and submitting U.S. and international patent applications (e.g., utility, continuation, divisional, pct.);
    2. Evaluating new technologies surrounding inventions in geophysics, oil and gas exploration, drilling and production, medical devices, telecommunications, computer software, and mechanical; and
    3. Providing technical expertise, opinions, and patentability for patent applications related to oil and gas exploration and production, drilling, petroleum geology.

US patent and trademark office (USPTO) license eligible.

10% domestic or international travel to unanticipated locations for client disclosure meetings. Must be available nights and weekends, as needed. Exempt salary position. Must meet minimum of 1700 billable hours annually.
