Who We Are

We are your neighbors, friends and relatives. We are 50,000 security officers, inspectors, directors, air marshals and managers who protect the nation's transportation systems so you and your family can travel safely. We look for bombs at checkpoints in airports, we inspect rail cars, we patrol subways with our law enforcement partners, and we work to make all modes of transportation safe.

A security officer saves a life. Another helps a stranded motorist on the side of the road. Still others help Denver air travelers dig out after three blizzards. Rather than being unique, these are everyday occurrences around TSA.

Today, approximately 50,000 Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) serve on TSA's frontline at more than 450 airports nationwide. They use their training and experience to effectively and efficiently screen nearly 2 million passengers a day.

Good security requires an engaged and empowered workforce, and TSA has undertaken a series of progressive workforce initiatives in recent years. These efforts have focused on motivating and educating the workforce by opening lines of communication, fostering safe and productive work environments and identifying and rewarding exemplary performance.

Veterans Outreach

The Transportation Security Agency (TSA) is committed to supporting the employment of veterans. Currently, veterans make up a significant proportion of our Transportation Security Officer (TSO) work force. TSA provides the broadest application of veterans' preference in the Federal Government when recruiting under competitive, external procedures for TSO positions.

Individuals with Disabilities Outreach

Operating on the front lines of America's security, we are committed to increasing the employment of people with disabilities, and offering those skilled people an environment in which they can excel. Because TSA's mission-critical occupations include strict physical and medical requirements that are based on statute, jobs potentially available for individuals with disabilities are more likely to be in TSA's management, administrative and professional (MAP) positions. We do, however, have a program for the hiring of individuals with disabilities, as well as extended outreach efforts to increase the participation of persons with disabilities and targeted disabilities in agency programs.

While TSA's hiring processes with regard to individuals with disabilities differ from those at other agencies, we invite you to visit the following pages to learn more about disability hiring practices: [URL:] DHS Disability Information [URL:] For more information, please contact Jacqueline Pickett at
