We are looking to expand our Data Architecture team to become more responsive to data design needs as we transform into an Agile environment. We are in need of Database Designers having significant data modeling and relational, dimensional, and NoSQL database design experience.

Database Designer Job Summary

Location: Westfield Center, OH or open to remote worker within Westfield's operating territory

Salary Range: $94,532 - $122,891

The Database Designer is responsible for (1) Database design and architecture, data analysis, data modeling, data solutioning; (2) Interpreting data requirements from business processes; (3) Designing conceptual, logical and physical data models with corresponding metadata; (4) Implementing necessary database tables to support application development; (5) Maintaining, supporting, and troubleshooting existing databases; (6) Reverse engineering databases; (7) Developing, maintaining, and enforcing database development standards; (8) Driving best practices to guide development teams on database programming.

Essential Functions (primary functions and/or reasons the job exists in order of importance)

  1. Understands and translates business needs into data models supporting long-term solutions.
  2. Works with the Application Development team to implement data strategies, build data flows and develop conceptual data models.
  3. Creates logical and physical data models using best practices to ensure high data quality and reduced redundancy.
  4. Optimizes and updates logical and physical data models to support new and existing projects.
  5. Maintains conceptual, logical and physical data models along with corresponding metadata.
  6. Develops best practices for standard naming conventions and coding practices to ensure consistency of data models.
  7. Recommends opportunities for reuse of data models in new environments.
  8. Performs reverse engineering of physical data models from databases and SQL scripts.
  9. Evaluates data models and physical databases for variances and discrepancies.
  10. Validates business data objects for accuracy and completeness.
  11. Analyzes data-related system integration challenges and proposes appropriate solutions.
  12. Develops data models according to company standards.
  13. Guides System Analysts, Engineers, Programmers and others on project limitations and capabilities, performance requirements and interfaces.
  14. Reviews modifications to existing software to improve efficiency and performance.
  15. Examines new application design and recommends corrections if required.
  16. Installs, maintains and supports Erwin modeling software.
  17. Leads small groups in moderate complexity projects.
  18. Applies understanding of how the data and our team fits into the "bigger picture" within Westfield.
  19. Maintains adequate version control for data analysis and design artifacts.
  20. Provides estimates and project plans involving data design changes.
  21. Travels occasionally in order to participate in special assignments, training, and/or travel between office locations.

Desired Qualifications/Experience/Certification/Education (in order of importance)

  1. 5 or more years' experience as a Database Designer.
  2. 1 or more years' experience in Database Design including Database Modeling.
  3. Analytical experience including problem solving, information gathering, business to IT translation of requirements, use case development and extensive testing execution.
  4. Experience with complex Database design and architecture, database programming, data analysis, data modeling, data integration, and data warehousing.
  5. Experience creating logical entities and defining their attributes as well as defining the relationships between the various data objects.
  6. Knowledge of data and database concepts.
  7. Experience managing/planning multiple tasks on an extended basis and within deliverable time frames.
  8. Proficient in SQL.
  9. Experience working in a team environment.
  10. Experience interacting with all levels of the organization.
  11. Experience picking up and understanding new technologies and concepts with little or no help from more senior staff.
  12. Experience working on projects, training, designing process solutions, and directly interacting with customers.
  13. Knowledge of business intelligence.
  14. Excellent oral/written communication skills.
  15. Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering or commensurate experience.
  16. Strong knowledge of the insurance industry.
  17. Strong knowledge of Insurance Application Architecture (IAA) and Insurance Application Warehouse (IAW) is a plus.
  18. Valid driver's license and a driving record that conforms to company standards.

  • Ability to work effectively in an office environment for 40+ hours per week (including sitting, standing and working on a computer for extended periods of time).
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a collaborative work environment utilizing various technologies such as: telephone, computer, web, voice, teleconferencing, e-mail, etc.
  • Ability to travel as required.
