You will provide material science & manufacturing expertise within the ISRU Production Systems team, in particular related to generating building materials. This team is focused on the development of ISRU technologies related to the manufacturing of useful products from regolith; such products could include, but are not limited to, alloys, photovoltaic cells, building materials or solar reflectors. In this hands-on role, you will conduct R&D, from designing and building test systems, developing & executing test plans and procedures, analysis of samples across the production path, rapid prototyping, and flight systems development.

• Minimum of a M.S. degree in metallurgical engineering, materials science/engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related technical field
• 3+ years of experience with metallurgical processes, metal recycling and furnace operations
• Experience will metallurgical and metal purification processes in laboratory furnaces
• Hands-on experience with mineralogical and metallurgical characterization techniques (e.g., standardized coupon testing)
• Expertise in sample chemical composition analysis techniques (X-ray spectroscopy techniques, SEM-EDS, etc.).
• Good knowledge of molten metal treatment for extraction and refining
• Experience with developing, writing and updating test procedures
• Ability to work collaboratively in a fast paced, dynamic work environment
• Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
• Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

• PhD in a relevant scientific or engineering field
• Experience with industrial furnaces and metal shaping systems such as casting, crystal growing and extrusion
• Good knowledge of structural and physical properties of basic metals and alloys
• Hands-on skills for building and assembling laboratory test equipment and prototypes
• Experience with extraction, shaping and purification of metals and metalloids
• Direct experience in the design, development, integration, and test of space and planetary ISRU systems and their underlying technologies
• Experience in handling regolith simulants
• Experience developing requirements, defining subsystem interfaces (both in-house and between external partners/suppliers), and other systems engineering products and practices
• Experience performing operations with handling hazardous commodities and the implications thereof
• Knowledge of product cleanliness levels and contamination control
