Principal Auditor - Credit Risk

Corporate Audit Services (CAS), the Internal Audit function within Capital One, is a dedicated group of audit professionals focused on delivering top quality assurance services to the organization's Audit and Risk Committee. The CAS department is considered one of the leading internal audit functions within the financial services industry and is highly regarded within Capital One. CAS professionals are experienced, well-trained and credentialed, and operate within a highly collaborative team environment to deliver value-added opinions and recommendations. The Risk Management Audit team is responsible for providing a comprehensive program of audit coverage for the firm's credit risk management framework and related controls across all lines of business.

CAS is seeking an energetic, self-motivated Principal Auditor who will be responsible for assisting the Audit Director in delivering the audit plan for assurance coverage of Capital One's Credit Risk Management processes in the Second Lind of Defense, including Credit Review, Commercial Credit Risk and Analytics, Consumer Credit Risk Management, and Counterparty Credit. The Associate will also act as a liaison with other Internal Audit teams by providing insights on credit risks and mitigating controls related to loan origination, loan administration, underwriting, loan servicing and credit risk management in the First Line of Defense. The Principal Auditor is expected to identify areas of risk and possible opportunities to improve efficiencies. As part of the broader Audit team, the candidate will also contribute to other audits as determined through audit planning processes.

The Principal Auditor will support the Audit Director in maintaining key business partner relationships, stay abreast of evolving industry practices, credit risk management methodology, and regulatory expectations relative to Credit Risk Management, and provide consultation to the broader audit team where appropriate, based on the interaction between Credit Risk Management and broader audit coverage.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform risk assessments of business units and design and perform appropriate audit procedures to verify the effectiveness of existing controls, identify and defines issues, review and analyze evidence, and document client processes and procedures.
  • Oversees major components of audits and leads small to medium size audits. Performs risk assessments of business activities, potential exposures and the materiality of loss. Provides input into the development of the annual audit plan.
  • Designs and performs appropriate audit procedures to verify the effectiveness of existing controls, identifies and defines issues, reviews and analyzes evidence, and documents auditee processes and procedures. Designs and executes internal control testing.
  • Understand the broader context and implications of the various types of risk affecting the business (e.g., financial, legal, reputational, etc.).
  • Establishes and maintains good client relations during engagements. Communicates or assists in communicating the results of some audit projects to management via written reports and oral presentations.
  • Identify expectations of the client and take actions to support the client experience.
  • Prepare clear, organized and complete documentation to support work performed.
  • Self-prioritize and effectively plan own work activities managing multiple priorities and tasks across the team to deliver quality results.
  • Coordinate with others and proactively take on additional work.
  • Deliver appropriate, succinct and organized information, tailoring communication style to audience.
  • Effectively communicate information, issues and audit progress to teammates, clients and auditor-in-charge.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or military experience.
  • At least 3 years' experience in bank or financial services auditing.
  • At least 2 years' experience leading audit engagements performing in the role of auditor-in-charge.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Advanced Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration.
  • Professional certification (or progress towards completion) in an audit related field such as a CIA, CPA, CRCM, or CFSA.
  • 3+ years' experience auditing credit or risk management activities of large financial services institutions.
  • 1+ years of experience in credit risk management, 1+ years of experience in credit review or a combination.
  • 1+ years of experience with data analytics tools in support of internal audit.
