Position Overview

The Office of the Chief Academic Officer is responsible for guiding the academic program in all 123 schools within the District with the goal of increasing the academic achievement of over 45,000 students in the District of Columbia.

The primary focus area for the Office of Secondary School Transformation includes designing policies, practices, and programs that help secondary students prepare for success in college and the world of work. The Office supports school-based staff in implementing DCPS’s existing academic programs and at the same time works to rethink and redesign secondary school programming to meet the needs of our students as they prepare to become productive members of the 21st-Century society.

The Manager of Secondary Scheduling has total responsibility for directing the student scheduling process for DCPS schools, and is accountable for the timely delivery of those schedules at various times during the year. The delivery of student schedules is the end product of a complete understanding of school master schedule design, integrating the vision and mission of the individual schools with the technical software application within central office system and local school constraints. An important objective of the position is to establish internal capacity at the individual local school level so schools can function with limited central office involvement.

The Manager of Secondary Scheduling reports to the Director, Office of Secondary School Transformation.

Responsibilities

* Plan and manage the production of student schedules for all schools in the district
* Have a complete understanding of school administration as it relates to scheduling, including but not limited to data systems, course selection, student enrollment and administration organization charts and corresponding duties
* Oversee the training and development of Master Schedulers at the local school level for all schools in the district
* Oversee the awareness and training of central office staff so there will exist a system-wide understanding of the interconnectedness of master scheduling with all academic decisions and student success
* Develop a deep understanding of all the system constraints to Master Scheduling and make suggestions for system modifications that will improve master scheduling
* Develop and support all 8th grade transition activities for OSST
* Track progress of the student course selection and scheduling process at schools
* Assess the concerns and needs of the schools and direct those concerns to the appropriate offices at central office
* Possess the skills to intervene when necessary to redirect the scheduling process at schools and to take direct control of school scheduling process when necessary
* Develop an industry-wide awareness of scheduling through research and professional development opportunities
* Project a budget and work within the budget
* Support and carry out the Chancellor’s mission to transform DC Public Schools and close the achievement gap
* Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 4-6 years work experience required, with master’s degree, specific experience managing others and/or projects, and/or specific education, technological, or public policy experience preferred. Previous exposure to or experience in the education sector and complex data systems a plus.

Educational Requirements
