Position Description
Mathematica Policy Research, Inc. (Mathematica), a nationally recognized, employee-owned company, known for its high-quality, objective research, currently has an opening in the Washington, DC office for a Program Analyst.
For over three decades, Mathematica has been a leader in the development and use of microsimulation models to inform social policy debates. These models and their databases are used to examine the impacts of policy changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, and related government assistance programs serving the low-income population.
Program Analysts work as multi-disciplinary team members on key project activities including:
-Using microsimulation models to provide policymakers with quick-turnaround analyses of the effects of proposed changes to SNAP
-Conducting high quality and objective research on policy issues affecting SNAP and other government assistance programs
-Responding to policy-related questions posed by federal decision-makers by developing estimation approaches, conducting data analysis, and communicating results via memorandums and formal reports
-Developing, updating, and enhancing microsimulation models and databases
Qualifications of successful candidates include:
-MA in public policy, demographics, economics, math, or a related field, or equivalent data analysis experience
-Knowledge of quantitative research methods
-Ability to focus critically and intensively on data challenges
-Interest in issues affecting low-income assistance programs
-Excellent oral and written communication skills
-Experience using SAS or similar statistical software is desirable
-Work experience with state or federal government, a policy research organization, a government services contractor, or a human services program is desirable
