Description
Atlantic Media Company, a rapidly growing media enterprise that publishes The Atlantic, National Journal, and Government Executive, is seeking a Controller to support the growing Finance and Accounting department. Overall responsibilities:
  • Manage the Accounting department of Atlantic Media Company
  • Supervise staff of 12 between Corporate Accounting (including payroll, A/R, and A/P) and Financial Planning & Analysis teams
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key management personnel across all five business units
  • Maintain Solomon accounting system, Forecaster budgeting and forecasting tool, and all other financial systems
  • Manage cash flow across multiple entities and ensure cash flow optimization
  • Maintain operational and financial policy, procedures and controls
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations
Specific duties:
  • Manage monthly general ledger close process
  • Manage preparation and distribution of financial statements and operational reports for the entire family of 12 publications
  • Manage the annual budgeting process, interim forecasting and budget v. actual analysis
  • Prepare various tax filings (e.g., Canadian GST, sales tax) and assist with preparation of quarterly and annual federal and state filings
  • Coordinate audit of 401(k) plan
  • Support Chairman, Business Unit Presidents and CFO on miscellaneous projects and analysis
  • Participate in vendor selection and contract management
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • Certified Public Accountant with in depth knowledge of GAAP
  • 7-12 years of experience with at least 5 years at a Big 4 firm
  • Strong work ethic, flexibility to work under tight deadlines and strong sense of urgency oriented toward achieving monthly goals
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, superior organizational and prioritization skills and extreme attention to detail
  • Positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills
  • Superior service ethic, grace under pressure and spirit of generosity
  • Resourcefulness and ability to work proactively and independently
  • Outstanding record of achievement and leadership in current/past positions
