Position Description

Friendship’s Mission is to prepare students to become ethical, well-rounded and self sufficient citizens by providing a world-class education that motivates students to reach high academic standards, enjoy learning, achieve success, and contribute actively to their communities.

The ideal candidate will have experience teaching special needs students with moderate to severe cognitive impairments, emotional, and behavioral impairments.

* Please note that this position is dependent upon grant funding and will be filled for the 2009-10 school year only.

Responsibilities:
• Deliver and/or modify curriculum in alignment with the expectations of FPCS and the DCCAS
• Assess learning styles; plan, implement adequate and appropriate academic, social, and emotional curriculum
• Develop and implement creative educational plans with the IEP team for all assigned students
• Understand and deliver appropriate behavioral plan for each student
• Document progress in all academic and social-emotional areas for the purpose of individualizing instruction and writing quarterly reports
• Understand and employ the precepts of Applied Behavior Analysis
• Utilize appropriate intervention with students experiencing behavior and emotional difficulties
• Communicates with LEAs and Parents on a regular basis to involve them in the educational and social process
• Documents incidents, suspension and therapeutic leaves as requested
• Model respect, honesty, consideration, responsibility and positive attitude with both peers and students
• Collaborate with teaching team to plan for and address student progress
• Maintain a safe, stimulating and nurturing learning environment
• Participate in staff meetings and in-service training as requested

Qualifications:
• BA required, or MA degree preferred
• Special Education Department of Education certification in relevant teaching field
• Experience and trained in de-escalation/physical intervention or willing to be trained
• Experience with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
• Experience working with students with special learning, emotional and /or behavioral needs
• Demonstrated ability to approach difficult youngsters in a creative and thoughtful manner
• Ability to teach, mentor, coach and advocate for students
• Flexibility to meet identified students needs
• Interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
• A strong commitment to the goals, mission and philosophy of Friendship Public Charter School
