Position Description

SUMMARY The Unix Administrator serves as the lead specialist for the Enterprise Operations Team of the Enterprise Operations Section. The administrator, as the systems operations technical lead, takes detailed engineering designs and draft run-books and converts them into fully operational infrastructure. S/he provides leadership to the team that provides reproducible excellence in both high availability and mission-critical computing. The administrator reports to the manager of Enterprise Operations Section and works very closely with the lead specialist for the Enterprise Engineering Team on the handoff of newly provisioned or modernized infrastructure to ensure its high availability and cost-effective operations. S/he leads in the mentoring of more junior unix administration staff and is a key technical liaison with operations DBA staff. S/he provides key technical oversight for component fault monitoring systems and facilitates ongoing inter-departmental discussions on enhancements to monitoring of availability and utilization. The administrator works extensively with project management staff on development of work breakdown structures and schedules for mission-critical infrastructure projects. S/he recommends technical staff assignments to complete project tasks and verifies quality of the overall work products. Capacity planning analysis is a core area of concentration for the administrator. The administrator is involved in infrastructure operational support primarily as a tier 2 resource (tier 1 = support desk).

Responsibilities:
* Serve as the lead systems operations resource for existing Unix/Linux infrastructure patterns.
* Act as a lead technical liaison with Enterprise Database, Enterprise Storage and Enterprise Engineering; to help ensure high availability of enterprise systems.
* Lead review and acceptance work with the Engineering Team for technical documentation including build manuals and run-books.
* Support and liaison with the QA/Test team to enhance capacity-planning for infrastructure and applications.
* Work with project management staff to assist in development of work breakdown structures and schedules for infrastructure projects.
* Verify technical accuracy and consistency of configuration changes made by other systems administration staff.
* Monitor and respond to issues on BigIP, Websphere, ColdFusion, PHP/Apache, Tomcat, Jini, Linux and Solaris servers as well as HA clustering solutions.
* Maintain PHP/Apache, Websphere, Java Tomcat, BigIP, ColdFusion & Java Jini, CoreMedia, Veritas Cluster Service and related systems on Linux and Solaris servers.
* Assist developers in migrating their code beyond the development environment.
* Participate as the lead technical resource in planning and execution of maintenance windows. * Play a leading role in capacity planning and optimization for infrastructure systems. * Write Syslog (change log), change control forms and Knowledgebase documents to improve operations and to contribute to development of a higher CMM rating for the IT organization.

Requirements
* A bachelor’s degree in computer science, management information systems or related field (or equivalent experience).
* Ten or more years administering UNIX and Linux. * Seven years experience in systems monitoring administration/architecture UNIX/Linux is architecture required.
* Experience administering IP load-balancing.
* Demonstrated knowledge of administering, Apache, Tomcat, PHP and Cold Fusion services.
* Knowledge of Oracle RDBMS is a major plus.
* Systems administration-level knowledge of DNS/BIND, SMTP/Sendmail, SNMP/NetSNMP, KERBEROS+AD, NIS, SAMBA, NFS, Knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Solaris; HA clustering with Heartbeat and DRBD knowledge are major pluses
* ITIL Foundations certification is a major plus.
* Perl and shell scripting expertise is required. * Knowledge of Jump-start/Kick-start is required.
* Extensive experience in TCP/IP networking is required.
* Extensive experience in administering Websphere is required.
* Experience supporting Java application development a required. * Experience administering Veritas Cluster Service is a plus.
* Knowledge of Windows workstation and server technology a major plus.
* Knowledge of Microsoft Office (including Visio diagramming tool) is required.
* Demonstrated ability to generate and maintain technical documentation is required.
* Excellent verbal communications skills are required.
