DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Troubleshoots, repairs, modifies and performs preventive maintenance on electrical systems such as high voltage distribution lines, airfield and street lighting systems, and other electrical systems and equipment maintained by the Exterior Electrical Section. Frequently moves items weighing up to 45 pounds. Subject to holdover or recall on a 24-hour basis for essential services and emergencies such as snow removal. Assignments may include work in the Distribution and/or the Airfield Lighting Units, as follows: Troubleshoots, modifies, repairs and performs preventive maintenance on secondary high voltage electrical distribution lines (0 - 35KV), traffic signals, street and parking lot lighting, stand by generators and related equipment. Records readings of gauges and dials in distribution centers. Isolates locations of faults in cables. Repairs switchgear and transformers. Threads, bends and installs conduit. Follows safe clearance switching orders to create temporary planned power outages by taking high voltage feeders off line and transferring load to other feeders without affecting power to airport facilities. Operates tripping mechanism of circuit breakers and applies hold tags. Does preventive maintenance and correction on stand by generators to assure they are constantly functional in case of power failure. Relamps and repairs over-head lighting operating a bucket truck. Troubleshoots, repairs, and completes preventive maintenance on airfield lighting (e.g., variable intensity runway, taxiway, threshold, touchdown and centerline lighting systems) example: uses amp probe to isolate area of problem, makes repair such as replacing bad transformer or corroded cable. Completes high voltage splices and terminations to restore power. Performs required calculations for voltage drop in relation to line loads. Walnut shell blasts rubber from airfield fixtures and torques to specifications, replaces bulbs and burnish contacts. Assists in projects, e.g., the relocation of threshold lights. As assigned, performs miscellaneous electrical work such as repairing security gates, repairing motors and associated control systems, etc. May assist an Electronics Technician in modifying or repairing electronic controls, equipment or systems, e.g., use computerized automatic test equipment to test and troubleshoot series current regulations. Uses blueprints, schematics, and manufacturer's manuals. Uses various hand and power tools including hammer gun, drills, pipe threaders and benders, volt/ohm meters, amp probe, fault locator, phase rotation meter, and high voltage meter. Will use computer keyboard and monitor. Drives a pick-up truck to airport work sites. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: This position requires five (5) years of appropriate experience working with emergency generators, constant current regulators, AC and DC controls, high voltage systems and associated equipment. Also, working with transformers, connections, operations, and parallel and series circuits to recognize excessive current flow, take high-voltage feeders offline, and determine the reasons for tripped breakers, and similar tasks to assure operation of high-voltage distribution and lighting systems. Candidates must have a valid State driver’s license, and be able to obtain an AOA license and a CDL, Class B, license within 90 days. SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Four years of approved apprenticeship training in the occupation of the position to be filled and one year of practical trade experience may be substituted for the five years of required experience. Four years of practical trade experience and 240 hours of vocational training may also meet the required qualification requirements for this position.
