The Position

The Department of English and Communication Studies invites applications for visiting assistant professor positions in Communication Studies to begin in August 2024; visiting appointments are nine-month positions and the College expects to hire up to two applicants for the role. Visiting positions are renewable up to three years based on performance and the needs of the College.

Primary responsibilities include teaching in a broadly-based Communication Studies Major that includes quantitative and mixed research methods, rhetoric, and applied communications. A commitment to general education and the liberal arts along with a dedication to engaging students as individuals is required. A Ph.D. in Communication Studies or a closely related area is desired; ABDs and Master's degree candidates will be considered. The teaching load per year is 8 courses or course-equivalents; course reassigned times are available to faculty as needs arise. Additional expectations include general service to the department, and candidates are supported in their scholarly research and professional pursuits. The Department and the College value excellence in teaching at the collegiate level and an interest in teaching and mentoring at a liberal arts college and the department offers majors in Communication Studies, Literary Studies, Creative Writing, and Screen Studies, with concentrations in Peace and Justice and Gender and Women's Studies.

Roanoke College is a nationally ranked residential liberal arts college, affiliated with the Lutheran Church (ELCA), located in the beautiful Roanoke Valley of Virginia. A Phi Beta Kappa institution, Roanoke College is an equal opportunity employer and actively seeks diversity among its faculty, staff, and students; women and members of under-represented groups are especially encouraged to apply. We also seek candidates with interests in mentoring under-represented students, diversifying curricular offerings, or sponsoring diverse community engagement. Applicants are asked to address their potential contributions in support of a diverse community in their cover letters.

To apply, submit to JobScore a letter of application, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy, copies of unofficial transcripts, and contact information for three professional references (letters of recommendation from references will be asked of candidates that advance through the first round of interviews and official transcripts will be required upon hire).

The positions are open until filled, but review of applications will begin on Wednesday, June 12, 2024; candidates with all application materials submitted by that date will receive full consideration. For more information about the position or to ask questions, please contact Dr. Ken McGraw via mcgraw AT roanoke DOT edu.
