Job Summary

The Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Business Tax Assessor.

The successful candidate will perform complex professional work, independently assessing business license, business tangible personal property, and local excise taxes. The successful candidate will be expected to provide excellent customer service while operating in a challenging and fast-paced work environment. The candidate must utilize state tax code, case law, and local ordinances to ensure that businesses are assessed fairly, equitably and uniformly. They will analyze business operations, tax returns, and other business records to ensure proper classification and assessment for business license, business tangible personal property, excise, and other local taxes. They will interact professionally with business owners, CPAs, attorneys, and other tax professionals to ensure local tax compliance. They must be prepared to defend assessments with office management, Treasurer's Office and County Attorney's office personnel as collection, bankruptcy, appeal and litigation issues dictate.

Must have exceptional writing, analytical, and communication skills. Must be familiar with business structures and business income taxes (Federal and Virginia). Must be able to meet deadlines, problem solve, and multitask. Must be quick to learn new automated software systems. Must be calm under pressure, communicating clearly, empathetically, and professionally in even the most challenging customer service situations. Must remain flexible as work priorities change, independently exercising good professional judgment, while maintaining confidentiality of tax information. Must provide court testimony, as necessary. Must participate in professional training to remain informed of federal, state, and local tax laws.

Hiring salary commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate degree (bachelor's preferred) in Business, Management, Finance, or related field and three (3) years of experience.

Knowledge of business structures, state and federal taxes, business procedures, and accounting practices is desirable. Spanish language skills are preferred.

Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

Successful candidate will undergo a criminal background, credit, and DMV record check.

Must maintain a valid driver's license in Virginia or regional state of residence. Must be familiar with Microsoft Office applications. Must have the ability to tour commercial facilities of all types.
