What You'll Do

Responsibilities. Supervise day-to-day operations, maintenance, and repair activities within the Pit operations. This position will report to the Plant Manager and assist in managing the Pit workforce. Responsible for SHE, quality assurance, employee relations, cost control, and budgeting activities.

Planning. Ensure team members have radios, tools, and safety equipment that are utilized and functioning at the beginning and during the work day.

Daily Tasks. Ensure a good understanding of daily tasks through job briefing and good radio communication. Evaluate team member's performance.

Managing Budgets. Will ensure that the operating area works within a defined budget, manages costs within set budgetary guidelines, and generates operating and project budgets for the operating area.

Safety. Enforce safety and company policies. Knowledge of UP/Vulcan practices and standards. Conduct pre-shift safety and job briefing meetings. Ensure team members are wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Conduct a hazard assessment of the work area and inform team members of safety hazards found. Assigned team members daily tasks. Be an example to follow. Responsible for the safety of all personnel and activities in the pit area.

Pit Operation. Manage the operation of the pit and stripping areas and pit and primary equipment repair and maintenance. Responsible for ongoing pit development plans and working closely with management/engineering to ensure the implementation of plans. Coordinate work with all areas of the pit.

Production. Ensure that production levels are optimum with minimum downtime and that mobile equipment is operated correctly.

Leadership. Create a strong working relationship with suppliers and vendors. Provide an example of good leadership. Keep effective lines of communication open with division staff and operation-level personnel. Motivate others and effectively accomplish tasks through others is essential.

Additional Responsibilities. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Skills You'll Need:

Experience. Previous experience supervising production employees, preferably at an aggregate, sand/gravel, or asphalt plant preferred.

Leadership and Management Skills. Must be able to provide strong leadership and mentorship to employees, both direct and indirect reports, to motivate and maintain interpersonal relationships.

Operational Knowledge. Must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of rock and sand mining, ready-mix concrete or asphalt operations and equipment, MSHA regulations, engineering principles and procedures, and quality control systems and processes.

Interpersonal Skills. Must be an excellent motivator and team builder. Must be able to form strong social relationships and effectively communicate with internal and external audiences.

Financial Knowledge. Knowledge and experience leading financial performance to established targets, meeting or exceeding performance goals.

Working Conditions. Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions and tolerate being exposed to loud noises.
