Job Description
Leads, directs, organizes, coordinates and oversees the overall strategic and business planning, information technology, and materials and fiscal management of areas assigned. Leads operational and functional responsibilities for a group of patient care areas across the continuum of care in support of population health care management and clinical service line leadership and care delivery. Provides guidance to other executives to support strategies unique to cancer care needs. Ensures alignment of productivity standards and service outcomes to support fiscal and operational excellence. Drives performance improvement and performance management initiatives for areas of oversight. Collaborates with key physician and organizational leaders to drive success of Cancer Service Line.

Essential Functions

Leadership:

  • Serves as a subject matter expert in all facets of cancer care delivery operations.

  • Exhibits an appreciation for preparation, collaboration, planning, communication and benchmarking of results to problem solve and support program building.

Business Operations:

  • Ensures budgets are completed in accordance with service line growth targets.

  • Ensures clinical throughput is commiserate with growth strategies and leads monthly review of actual visit activity compared to volume growth targets.

  • Ensures appropriate review of variance and justification is completed among management team.

  • Authorizes expenses of areas of oversight within scope of authority.

  • Completes analysis and recommendations for clinic expansion initiatives, incorporating appropriate leadership and stakeholder engagement.

  • Collaborates with MCVP colleagues to ensure barriers to clinical encounters are mitigated.

  • Partners with key stakeholders of MCVP, Ensemble and revenue cycle activities to ensure appropriate oversight and monitoring is achieved in timely and accurate billing functions. Monitors workflows as needed.

  • Establishes structure for new service deployment, engaging appropriate representation from key departments, as appropriate.

  • Leads teams responsible for fiscal outcomes of the Cancer Clinical Service Line, ensuring appropriate resources, data analytics, benchmarking and data reporting processes are continuously current and engaged with clinical team members.

  • Leads teams to review and action improvement in areas of financial variance.

  • Develops and implements ongoing cadence of clinical program quality/financial reviews using structured performance management tools.

  • Prepares financial summary documents and presentation materials as needed.

  • Oversees capital equipment planning and purchase process for service line, in collaboration with department leaders.

Strategy:

  • Maintains content knowledge of changing clinical patterns of care/technology that influence strategy.

  • Reviews market share, physician referral, payer mix and reimbursement and patient experience data with teams on a quarterly basis.

  • Participates in strategic planning initiatives, contributing relevant data and insights to discussion at the individual disease level.

  • Collaborates with Strategic Planning and Business Development leaders to operationalize strategic plan, incorporating the Massey CCSG Strategic Plan elements (clinical trial accruals) into overall operations.

  • With key leadership, identifies and plans for new market entry, as appropriate.

Team Building

  • Creates a high-performing team as evidenced by recruitment of key talent, retention of team members, and excellent employee engagement results.

  • Maintains structured communication strategies to engage leadership, staff and community in support of Massey Cancer Center activities, as appropriate.

  • Creates opportunities to leverage VCU Health activities to support inquiry into professional preparation and role development for roles served by the Cancer Clinical Service Line.

  • Conducts regular meetings with individual direct reports and "skip" leaders, ensuring organizational communication is shared, and staff are informed of key messages pertaining to them.

  • Celebrates successes and develops staff towards continuous improvement.

  • Promotes a compassionate and supportive environment, demonstrating support to all staff members.

  • Completes developmental plans with each employee to support ongoing professional and role development.

  • Leads and collaborates with cross-functional teams to achieve outcomes.

Project Management

  • Effectively manages projects assigned, identifying scope, timelines, resources required, scheduling and team management towards desired outcomes

  • Ensures stakeholder inclusion and communication of action items/outcomes.

  • Delivers projects on-time and on-budget.

  • Participates in broader organizational project management as appropriate for the Cancer Service Line.

Required Education

Bachelor's Degree and/or Clinically-related degree (RN, PharmD, etc.)

Preferred Education

Master's Degree or higher in Business, Management, Finance, Health Care Administration, or any healthcare field.

Licensure/Certification preferred

Project Management Certification

Experience Required

10 years progressive operational experience in an academic cancer program, including 5 years oncology management experience at a manager or director level position.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Cost accounting and reimbursement knowledge, Micro Soft office proficiency, proficient business writing skills
