Full time Physician Assistant opportunity with Carilion Family Medicine Hillsville. The PA will assist physicians and other nursing personnel in the delivery of primary health care and patient care. Duties include, but are not limited to: Assess, plan and provide care to pediatric, adult and geriatric patients. Perform patient examinations, compile appropriate patient information and documentation. Review patient reports and make appropriate recommendations and refill medications. Monday-Friday. Four days per week. Two year experience preferred.

The Physician Assistant (PA) demonstrates knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and assesses data reflective of the patient's status. The PA interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific needs and provides care according to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Obtains comprehensive health history. Performs basic physical, psychological and developmental assessments using the techniques of observation, inspection, auscultation, percussion and palpation.
  • Discriminates between normal and abnormal physical, psychological and developmental findings and appropriately determines when to consult and/or refer the patient to other members of the health care team.
  • Performs or requests laboratory/radiology procedures and screening tests. Analyzes and interprets these and other health data.
  • Assesses, diagnoses, and manages selected acute and chronic illnesses and conditions. Initiates and implements appropriate treatment plan using established protocols or physician consultation.
  • Able to utilize automated computer systems, including electronic medical records. Accurately records assessment findings, documenting in a clear and concise manner all actions taken in response to these findings.
  • Documentation of patient information in the medical records in a timely manner to include update treatment procedures, medication refills, test results, patient concerns, etc.
  • Administers medications and injections as needed.
  • Coordinates necessary appointments and referrals, including the use of community resources, as the patient's health status dictates.
  • Consults with physician, as appropriate, keeping physician informed of needs and problems related to patient care. Recognizes limits in role as physician assistant provider.
  • Provides patient/family education needs are identified in a timely manner. Teaches, discusses and plans with patient and family for continued health management. Promotes wellness through health education. Acts as a clinical and professional resource to patients, other health team members, the community and various academic institutions. Assists with and teaches in-service to hospital personnel and Medical Residents.
  • Maintains patient flow, patients seen in appropriate order and keeps exam rooms filled. Makes or returns calls within specified timeframe to include handling refill requests.

What We Require:


Education: Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program required.

Experience: Clinical experience appropriate to specific practice/ department preferred.

Licensure/Certification: Current Physician Assistants license (PA) required. DEA licensure required. AHA BLS-HCP certification required. Advanced life support is preferred and is required for those who may use a defibrillator in their practice.

Other: Meets credentialing requirements. Qualifies for malpractice insurance and is accepted by Carilion Clinic's malpractice insurance carrier. Ability to work collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers. Maintains open and supportive communications between all department members and other employees, patients and their family members. Commitment to continued professional development.
