Job Description
The Nursing Director Ambulatory coordinates and directs nursing practice within the designated assigned areas of responsibility to ensure that VCU Health System and the Cancer Service Line are recognized within the community for excellence in nursing through continued recognition with Magnet designation by ANCC. The Nursing Director Ambulatory is responsible for assisting the Sr. Nursing Director with leading nursing services by providing administrative, fiscal, management, regulatory, and clinical oversight within the assigned areas. Works in close collaboration with the Sr. Nursing Director to operationalize programs and services and to ensure quality care and exceptional experience for patients across the care continuum.

  • Establishes, promotes, and maintains collaborative relationships with units and teams within assigned areas.

  • Establishes an environment in which it is both encouraged and expected that staff speak up for safety; support staff in speaking up; assists Sr. Nursing Director by proactively assessing problems and take actions to fix system causes of them; Encourage reporting of events and near misses; Facilitate timely evaluation of safety events involving department or staff and implement planned corrective actions; Demonstrates the knowledge and ability of appropriate escalation/involvement of Sr. Nursing Director regarding safety events and development of mitigation and improvement strategies;

  • Supports Sr. Nursing Director in establishing and maintaining an appropriate and responsible organizational structure and staffing plan that promotes efficient accomplishment of organizational and service line goals and compliance with hospital guidelines.

  • Provides oversight of day-to-day operations, staffing, scheduling, training, evaluation, and problem resolution; provides coaching and direction to nurse leaders to make evidence-based decisions regarding care processes, quality improvement, patient flow and throughput, and labor productivity;

  • Supports Sr. Nursing Director by cascading communication and convening regular staff meetings to discuss divisional and organizational priorities

  • Demonstrates collaborative relationships with providers and shared services team members, including resolving patient/family concerns and promoting team engagement and satisfaction

  • Support, develop, translate, and communicate divisional and organizational performance goals; maintains awareness of unit level quality performance metrics and leads quality review; oversees implementation of nursing quality improvement;

  • Supports Sr. Nursing Director with preparation of annual operational and capital budget proposals; helps monitor cost center fiscal performance and acts as necessary to remain within budget; Ensures cost center variance reporting is completed in a timely manner and reviews variance reports for trends and opportunities.

  • Demonstrates the understanding through visibility and accessibility that staff need to be able to recognize and access leaders across all shifts and business days.

  • Supports Sr. Nursing Director by monitoring unit and team compliance with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations, including those related to Medicaid, Medicare, and HIPAA;

  • Demonstrates self-development and continuous learning using assessments to identify opportunities for improvement and developing improvement plan and implementation; Demonstrates VCUHS Star Values by role modeling behaviors and creating a customer service culture that supports his/her employees in their efforts to provide excellent customer service, demonstrate appreciation for diversity and use data to analyze and implement enhancements to customer service delivery.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
Current RN licensure in Virginia

Experience REQUIRED:
7 years of clinical nursing experience with at least 3 of those 7 in progressive leadership and/or management roles

Experience PREFERRED:
Experience in academic medical center environment

Education/training REQUIRED:
Master's Degree in Nursing or a related field. from an accredited school.
If Master's Degree is not in Nursing, then it is a requirement to have a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from an accredited school.

Education/training PREFERRED:
Master's Degree in Nursing from an accredited program
Certification in specialty area
