Position Details: Randolph-Macon College invites applications for an approved 1-year (renewable for an additional year) appointment as an Visiting Assistant Professor in the Archaeological Studies Program/Classics Department to begin September 2, 2024.

Institution Information: Randolph-Macon College, founded in 1830, is a selective, primarily residential liberal arts college with an enrollment of 1500 students located in the northern suburbs of Richmond, Virginia. It is 90 miles south of Washington, DC and 15 miles north of Richmond. The archaeology major provides students with a coherent, interdisciplinary introduction to the practice, theory, methods, regulations, and ethics of archaeology, and successful applicants will demonstrate an appreciation for and understanding of the undergraduate liberal arts college environment.

Major/Essential Functions: Randolph-Macon College faculty teach, advise, conduct research and engage in scholarship, and serve the college and department. The annual teaching load is seven courses (3-1-3). Areas of specialization are open, but a candidate focused in Roman archaeology is preferred. The candidate must be prepared to teach at all undergraduate levels, and to respond to the needs of the program, department, and general education programs. Specific courses listed below.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Classical Art and Archaeology (or a related field); we will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status and who will complete their degree by August 1, 2024;
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching;
  • Evidence of a commitment to undergraduate teaching and student engagement;
  • Ability to teach Archaeological Field Methods and Theory; Archaeology, Museum, and Art Laws, and Ethics (Cultural Resource Management); Greek and Roman Art and Archaeology, other material culture or ancient art history courses;
  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to pedagogical methods that enable students across racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups to reach their maximum potential.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to teach Greek or Latin at the undergraduate level.
