Job Description
The Intake Admission Coordinator screens inpatient referral calls and make admission decisions utilizing established clinical criteria. This job obtains insurance authorizations and necessary pre-certifications to maximize reimbursement potential for planned clinical and medical services. This job also educates and trains VCUHS medical residents and clinical staff about the psychiatry admissions process and procedures.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Clinical Psychologist (LCP) by the Commonwealth of Virginia preferred Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment: Current LCSW, LPC, or LCP preferred Experience REQUIRED: N/A Experience PREFERRED: Previous work experience working with insurance carriers and managed behavioral health carve-out organizations Previous work experience with in-patient admissions, Community Services Boards, crisis intervention and triage/clinical screening experience Education/training REQUIRED: Master's Degree in a Healthcare related field (e.g. Healthcare Administration, Allied Health, etc.) from an accredited program Education/training PREFERRED: Master's Degree in Human Services (e.g. Counseling, Social Work, Rehabilitation Counseling, Nursing) from an accredited program Independent action(s) required: Using the hospital Inpatient Psychiatry admissions criteria, the Intake Admissions Coordinator will make direct decisions regarding the appropriateness of patients for admission to the inpatient psychiatry service. Handles all required insurance/managed care authorization and pre-certification functions for each admission scheduled and communicates relevant clinical information to the physicians and nursing staff prior to the admission of each patient. Utilizes sound clinical judgment in applying predetermined admission criteria for the Inpatient Service, under the supervision of the Associate Director of Inpatient Psychiatry Programs and the Chairman of the Division of Inpatient Psychiatry. Utilizes the Automated Patient Appointment Scheduling System (IDX) to view demographics and insurance information entered through the hospital/clinic systems. Uses knowledge of patient's presenting problems, urgency of clinical need, and expertise of the various providers to make appropriate need decisions. Utilizes his/her clinical expertise to serve as a crisis consultant as needed and provides clinical backup and support to non-clinical Patient Services Representatives in the performance of their scheduling duties. Functions under the clinical supervision of the Director of Intake and Referral Services or designee and the Clinical Operations Director. Utilizes the computerized Bedboard to monitor and update unit bed status.
