The mission of the Center for Biostatistics and Health Data Science (CBHDS) is to achieve excellence in Virginia Tech's health- and medically-related research portfolio through fostering collaborations across biostatistics, data science, health analytics, computer science, engineering, bioinformatics, biology, database management and integration, project coordination, clinical practice, health economics, translation and public policy. To achieve this mission, CBHDS seeks to:

Identify, integrate and coordinate expertise and resources pertinent to the areas of biostatistics, statistics, health analytics, data science, epidemiology, data management, informatics, health economics, etc to provide a central support hub for health- and medically-related research; Promote the use and awareness of appropriate contemporary analytic methods in health- and medically-related research projects;

Provide training and mentorship to statisticians, analysts, and data scientists relative to communication and collaboration with biomedical and health researchers; Through effective interdisciplinary collaboration, gain an understanding of disease etiologies, adopt effective treatment and prevention strategies, and positively impact mental and physical health and quality of life. Our work is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary, so the selected candidate will have opportunities to engage with Virginia Tech researchers across various organizations. In Roanoke, many of our collaborators specialize in addiction, mental health, and neuroscience, and thus the ideal candidate would have experience and interest in this area of health science research.

Under the role of Research Scientist, the selected candidate will serve as a biostatistician in a team science research environment supporting studies conducted by the Center for Biostatistics and Health Data Science at Virginia Tech. The candidate will engage in study design, data wrangling, data management, and data analyses; write statistical methods sections and perform sample size and power computations using simulations and software tools for grant proposals; coordinate statistical activities with research project managers; conduct appropriate statistical analyses using statistical languages (e.g., R, SAS) including interpreting and presenting results; read and digest necessary biomedical and clinical research, applying appropriate classical, Bayesian, and contemporary analytic techniques; write and edit statistical methods sections for abstract and manuscript submissions; provide complex statistical programming and analysis support for large datasets, including data from electronic health records and medical claims datasets; and mentor medical students, graduate students or student interns in their quantitative research studies.

Required Qualifications

PhD in Statistics, Biostatistics, or relevant discipline:
Experience as a biostatistician in a collaborative, team-science research setting, experience in study design, power and sample size estimation using simulation and software tools, and grantsmanship, significant experience (at least 3 years) in advanced statistical programming (e.g., SAS, R) with demonstrated experience writing advanced R scripts to summarize complex relationships.

Familiarity with and experience using Github for reproducibility and version control, significant experience in the application of traditional statistical modeling (logistic regression, Poisson regression, categorical data analysis, mixed effects modeling, GEE modeling, time-series analysis, structural equation modeling, etc) as well as Bayesian methodology, demonstrated expertise in time-series analysis, structural equation modeling, deep learning and predictive analytics, simulation and data visualization.

Preferred Qualifications

A demonstrated collaborative publication record and experience as a co-investigator and/or biostatistician on NIH funded grants, experience in computational cognitive science and modern functional neuroimaging methodology, demonstrated experience working with large health related datasets (EHR, Claims, Biobank, etc).

Demonstrated experience mentoring medical students, graduate students or student interns in quantitative research studies, bioinformatics experience, including metagenomics and epigenomics.
