Job Description

The Marquez lab will start at Virginia Tech's Department of Biological Sciences in the summer 2024, and is looking for a lab and animal care technician.

We are hiring a full-time laboratory and animal care technician, whose main responsibilities will be to assist with the lab's ongoing projects, manage the lab's logistics, and lead the care of our captive frog colonies. Animal care will entail feeding and monitoring frogs on a daily basis, as well as rearing feeder insects (e.g. fruit flies), and maintaining the housing facility. Lab management will entail ordering and maintaining equipment and supplies, coordinating administrative procedures such as animal care and biosafety protocols, and assisting with the organization of lab activities. Research support will be mainly in molecular biology.

Depending on the technician's interests and future goals, there will be the opportunity for supervised independent research within the scope of the lab's research program. Technicians will also be able, and encouraged, to pursue professional development opportunities beyond their immediate responsibilities that align with their future career aspirations, such as workshop or job fair participation, or preparation of graduate school applications.

Required Qualifications

* Research experience in the biological sciences.
* Experience with live animal care, ideally in amphibians.

Preferred Qualifications

* A Bachelors degree in the natural sciences, or equivalent experience.
* Experience in research and husbandry with amphibians.
* Knowledge and experience in evolutionary genetics.
* Proficiency in molecular biology and/or bioinformatics, especially in the context of nucleic acid sequencing.
