The Department of Chemical Engineering at Virginia Tech is seeking applications for a Professor of Practice. We are seeking candidates motivated to contribute to a collegial, interdisciplinary community with a strong tradition of both fundamental and applied research. The successful applicant will support undergraduate students through the teaching of core and elective chemical engineering courses and providing career advising. In particular, we are interested in individuals who can teach our Business and Marketing for the Process Industries elective, and suitable candidates will be considered for a Joseph H. Collie Endowed Professorship. The successful applicant will also act as a liaison between undergraduate students and industrial representatives, advising students regarding internship, co-operative education, and full-time employment options and opportunities.

The department currently has 17.5 full-time faculty members, including several early career awardees and holders of endowed professorships. The department is home to over 300 undergraduate and 60 graduate students. The department benefits from excellent facilities with most of the faculty located in the recently constructed Goodwin Hall. Disciplinary areas of specialization include biomedical engineering, catalysis and surface science, colloids and interfaces, membranes and advanced separations, polymer science and engineering, process design and systems engineering, and supercritical fluids. The current annual departmental research expenditures exceed $4.0 M.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must have a strong background in chemical engineering principles as evidenced by: an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering, advanced training (MS or PhD) in chemical engineering or closely related field, and 5+ years of professional experience applying engineering principles in industry, business, government, nonprofit, and/or research settings.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with: ten or more years of professional experience applying engineering principles in industry, business, government, nonprofit, and/or research settings, professional service to national societies (e.g., AIChE, ACS), experience engaging with clients from a variety of industries, organizations, and/or disciplines, and experience mentoring engineering student interns and/or engineering student team projects.
