Faculty Position in the Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering

Virginia Tech - Assistant Professor, Manufacturing Analytics and AI

The Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, effective August 2024. We seek outstanding candidates with a focus on Manufacturing Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI), including but not limited to advanced manufacturing; design automation and generative design; autonomous manufacturing processes; Industrial Internet; AI and machine learning for advanced manufacturing; AI applications to materials discovery and materials genome; machine-process interactions; digital twins; robotics, automation, and human-robotic interaction; renewable and sustainable manufacturing processes and systems; emerging topics in manufacturing and supply chain, such as sustainability, security, and resilience; and closely related areas within the domains of Manufacturing Design and Process Innovation, and Augmented Industrial Data and Decision Science. We are seeking candidates motivated to contribute to a collegial, interdisciplinary community with a strong tradition of both fundamental and applied research, high-quality teaching, and mentoring.

The ISE Department has 33 tenured/tenure-track faculty, with an additional ten non-tenure-track instructional and research faculty. Six faculty are recent early investigator recipients, and numerous others have received international or national recognition. Academic programs and research in the department encompass Human Factors Engineering and Ergonomics, Management and Systems Engineering, Manufacturing Systems Engineering, and Operations Research. Candidates will thus have the opportunity to work with a broad range of departmental faculty, as well as with faculty in many other colleges, centers, and institutes at Virginia Tech. The department is home to approximately 600 undergraduate students, 140 master's students, and 115 doctoral students. Candidates are expected to lead innovative scholarship and research, develop and sustain an externally-funded research program, teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and serve the university and the profession. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in industrial and systems engineering or a closely related field, a strong record of academic accomplishments, a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, a commitment to interdisciplinary research and instruction, and a willingness to expand disciplinary boundaries to address complex technical and societal challenges.
