Overview

The Technology Transition Division (TTD) at Hepburn and Sons LLC develops and shepherds emerging technologies in power distribution, power system monitoring, power electronics, and electromagnetic survivability (among others) to meet the warfighter's needs. In TTD we are an innovation incubator evaluating, maturing, and verifying technologies for product introduction and transition into the maritime shipbuilding industry, Navy shipbuilding, and DoD applications. Strategic partnerships with industrial and academic leaders whether it be small or large businesses, universities or manufacturers, provides maturation of these technologies to revolutionize U.S. warfighting capability for the 21st century.

As an electrical engineering manager working for Hepburn and Sons LLC within TTD, you will work with a multi-disciplinary engineering team on a variety of engineering efforts and lead electrical technology innovation for DoD applications, with emphasis in the U.S. Navy. Electrical technologies include insulated bus pipe (IBP) for shipboard distribution system, solid state transformer conversion for active front end applications, MVDC switchgear for inline distribution protection, medium voltage insulation health monitoring, electromagnetic pulse (EMP) hardening of electronic equipment, and others. In this position, you will lead technology maturation while reporting to the Director of the Technology Transition Division. You will be responsible for both leading execution of existing projects and pursuing new business development opportunities. In an engineering manager role, you will be expected to be adept at resolving both technical challenges and interpersonal conflict. You will be responsible for achieving project milestones and objectives, solving unique and complex problems that have a broad impact upon company growth and ultimately for the warfighter. This position is either remote or in-office (Manassas, VA).

Responsibilities
    Lead as a principal investigator (PI) and collaborate with the Director of Technology Transition Division regarding program status and any technical scope, cost, schedule, or administrative challenges associated with your projects
  • Develop strategies for engineering program growth, development, and execution
  • Recommend and implement product, process, or service improvements
  • Provide oversight and guidance for technical approaches, projects, tools, publications, products and processes of the engineering portfolio
  • Lead, motivate, and mentor team members or direct reports to achieve program goals
  • Develop and maintain relationships and partnerships with stakeholders, customers, peers, partners, and direct reports
  • Interface and coordinate with internal teammates as well as external customers and stakeholders to define objectives, provide status updates, and work towards transition
  • Perform technology demonstrations, qualification programs, requirements development, systems integration, design space exploration or analysis of alternatives studies, shipyard installation evaluations
  • Lead technology maturation through introduction and use of engineering tools beneficial to a given project scope/technology
  • Assist with managing schedule and tasks utilizing project portfolio management tools
  • Identify and resolve potential complications within projects/programs and develop solutions for resolution
  • Perform risk assessments, risk mitigation planning, and maintenance of risk registers
  • Participate in and initiate business development at conferences/symposiums such as Surface Navy Association (SNA), American Society of Naval Engineering (ASNE) Technology Systems and Ships (TSS), Sea Air and Space (SAS), ASNE Fleet Maintenance and Modernization Symposium (FMMS), IEEE Electric Ships Technology Symposium (ESTS), ASNE Advanced Machinery Technology Symposium (AMTS)
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET Accredited)
  • 5+ years of industry experience
  • Ability to obtain a Top Secret level clearance
  • In-depth and/or breadth of expertise in electrical engineering with a multi-disciplinary engineering or systems engineering approach
  • Experience leading technology development for new product introduction
  • Passion for mentoring others in ones expertise and learning from others' expertise in a collaborative and innovative team culture
  • Knowledge of and experience managing engineering projects, programs and/or portfolios
  • Experience writing white papers, publications, and proposals
  • Experience in business development strategy and capture management
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Up to 20% annual travel

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced engineering degree with applied expertise
  • Entrepreneurial and innovative spirit
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Training or experience in Shipley Business Development
  • Familiar with military applications of technology
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following: power electronic hardware systems, medium voltage insulation design and integration, electromagnetic pulse hardening of power systems equipment, power systems protection coordination
  • Breadth of familiarity or interest in power systems equipment integration including distribution, protection, conversion, communications, hardening, and controls
