Job Description:

The Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides direct and consultative services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) in the least restrictive environment as determined by the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). The Teacher of the D/HH shall be knowledgeable of current instructional methodologies used to educate students who are D/HH. The qualified candidate shall be able to educate general education staff on the unique needs of students who are D/HH and work collaboratively with the general education staff, special education staff and administrators to develop appropriate educational programs for students who are D/HH. The qualified candidate will be able to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students who are D/HH as well as develop standards-based IEPs.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred

  • Certificates/Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education License with an endorsement in Special Education for the Hearing Impaired or eligibility to obtain one. Postgraduate Professional License and Endorsement in Deaf and Hard of Hearing PreK-12 preferred
  • Experience: Experience as a classroom or itinerant teacher of the deaf or hard of hearing required.

Key Competencies and Essential Functions:

  • Applies principles of learning and effective teaching in the instructional delivery for students who are D/HH.
  • Develops and collaborates regarding programmatic changes, as it applies to service delivery, pedagogy, and student self-advocacy to meet the academic, social and physical needs of students who are D/HH.
  • Uses a variety of instructional strategies appropriate for teaching students who are D/HH from diverse backgrounds with varying learning styles and special needs.
  • Implements the most up-to-date strategies and instructional practices to meet the needs of the D/HH population.
  • Uses materials, technology and resources to help meet the learning needs of students who are D/HH in the general education classroom.
  • Utilizes ongoing assessment to monitor student progress.
  • Develops appropriate standards-based individualized education program (IEP) present levels of functioning statements, goals, objectives, accommodations, and all other components of an IEP.
  • May perform other additional duties or tasks as designated by supervisor.

Clearance

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test

Public Health Compliance

  • Proof of COVID vaccination. Exemptions for religious/medical will be reviewed.
  • Must follow safety and health protocols.
