General Information:

The School of Art, Design, and Art History is accepting applications for Part-Time Fabrication Lab Assistant. The Fabrication Lab Assistant will provide support at the Studio Center to the Architectural, Industrial, and Graphic Design areas.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Fabrication Lab Assistant will oversee safety of the facilities and equipment primarily during evenings and weekends when the shops are open and available for students and faculty. Some daytime/weekday hours will also be needed. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
-Manage and supervise students and student employees working in various shop/lab environments (wood shop, metal shop, casting lab, CNC lab, laser cutter, and 3D printer lab).
-Help train and supervise students and shop assistants.
-Help establish and maintain safety protocols for using all tools and equipment, and provide safety training for students and faculty.
-Complete regular documented safety inspections in shops.
-Monitor consumables inventory levels and communicate with Fabrication Manager for supply and equipment purchases.
-Perform basic routine maintenance on equipment as needed.
-Create written communications on behalf of the Fabrication Lab, for such purposes as recruiting student workers, informing students about new equipment and policies, and disseminating the shop’s calendar.
-Stay up-to-date with technology, software, materials, and manufacturing processes.
-Work with Design students and faculty to analyze and build their projects from brainstorming through ideation, user testing, and final prototyping and/or model-making.
-Maintain a positive and supportive educational environment.
-Additional responsibilities or tasks assigned by the Fabrication Manager or School Director.

 

Qualifications:

Successful candidates must have professional experience in art, woodworking, and/or design, or similar field. Candidates must have an understanding of the design process from conceptualization to final production, and will preferably have an understanding of the pedagogy of an academic art/design program.

The desired candidates must have woodshop and/or fabrication experience. Candidates should have experience working with 3D modeling software (preferably Rhino) and with the Adobe Creative Suite or similar software, and be willing to learn various software applications used in the design degree programs. In addition, the candidates will have some experience with either CNC routers, laser cutters, or 3D printers and must be willing to learn how to safely use and operate all fabrication and woodworking equipment. Candidates should possess excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills including a demonstrated ability to work within a diverse community. Candidates must have evening availability during the week, some afternoon availability, and availability on Sunday afternoons/evenings.

 

Conditions of Employment:  

This is a part-time position working an average of 29 hours per week over an academic year with no benefits.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check.
